Stephen Kris Design Blog

Welcome to the Stephen Kris Design Blog. I am a custom jewelry designer and goldsmith living and working in New York City. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you and hope to demystify some of the myths surrounding fine jewelry design, provide truths about gemstones, and insights into my process both as a designer and goldsmith. I am an internationally known jewelry designer and goldsmith who trained in the classical Swiss and Danish traditions. During my apprenticeships I learned the importance of making jewelry components by hand and employing the art of forging to achieve the highest level of craftsmanship possible. My personal design aesthetic has an architectural quality – I combine contemporary design and elegance with the highest level of quality because this is what my customers want and expect.

My personal philosophy is that high quality, custom jewelry design is a good investment regardless of the precious metal used or the value of a gemstone. I work directly with the customer to mold their vision into a one-of-a-kind work of art meant for display on the hands, wrists, ears, and neck of men and women. Every customer receives individual attention and is part of the creative process. My customer base ranges from friends, family, artists, and engaged couples planning their wedding on a budget to actors and musicians. I have designed custom jewelry for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, actress Sarah Jessica Parker, musician and composer Randy Newman, artist Marcus Wolf, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, and Oscar nominee Sheldon Turner.

White gold vs Gray gold: What is the difference?

White gold vs Gray gold: What is the difference?

In the United States white gold is an alloy composed of yellow gold, nickel, copper, and zinc. I always felt that there are two essential shortfalls in this. First, some people are allergic to the nickel in the alloy which causes a skin rash; and second, most white gold alloys but instead exhibits a slight yellow, […]

Is your ring hand forged or cast from wax?

Is your ring hand forged or cast from wax?

How do you know the difference? Let me explain. I think of hand forged rings as the yummy mud pie….dense and sinfully luscious. On the other end of the spectrum are rings cast from wax.  This is what is available from most generic jewelry shops from Zales to Tiffany. Yes my friends, even Tiffany. These […]
